Training nurses in Sacramento on providing Labor Support - September, 2005

What the nurses had to say:
  • Great! Loved the hands on, got me to really think about pushing for non-medicinal interventions.
  • Debbie is a very natural teacher. The video was entertaining and informative.
  • Great talk, loved the visuals and examples. I didn’t really know how to help my patients who were unmedicated before this. I feel much more confident now.

Doulas-in-training Laura, Gia, Susan, Melanie & Lisa put their thoughts about their May 2006 San Francisco training experience into these words:

BACK LABOR
Oh, oh I feel the pressure in my back
What to do to try and fight back
Knee press: sit in a chair, press the knees back
Hold through the contraction and you'll bounce right back
Double hip press is the master of relief
Be wary Doulas, you'll be exhausted beyond belief
All fours is the best
Let gravity fix the mess
Add a little pressure in the form of a pack
Put it right in the small of her back
If that doesn't work, bring out the ball
Just make sure she doesn't fall
If she gets tired, lay her on her side
Don't forget the pillow between her thighs

LONG LABOR
For the long labor risk
You'll need all your doula tricks
Make sure she stays well hydrated & fed
Try to get her moving and out of the bed
Through the contraction breath he hahs
Just like you learned in Lamaze
If her anxiety starts to raise
Don't forget words of praise
Massage & visualization are divine
Because we're trying to focus on 1 cm at at time
